01 · Why did this happen?

If I find the multiple strategies I'm holding are genuinely highly correlated, how do I adjust to achieve real diversification?

The practical approach is consciously choosing combinations with clearly different underlying dependencies, rather than simply increasing the number of strategies. Concretely, prioritize combinations across chain ecosystems (a strategy dependent on chain A paired with one dependent on chain B), across market conditions (a strategy needing low volatility paired with one that benefits from high volatility), and across data sources (different strategies using different price oracle services).

If you find it hard to locate genuinely heterogeneous alternatives in the short term, the more practical approach isn't forcing together strategies that look different on the surface but are still correlated underneath — it's first honestly accepting that your current position is fundamentally concentrated, planning position size with the caution appropriate to that concentration risk, and gradually adjusting once you find genuinely heterogeneous options.

02 · What is the mechanism?

If I don't have the ability to check each strategy's technical details myself, is there a simpler way to judge the degree of diversification?

Even without verifying specific technical details (which oracle, which bridge), there's a relatively simple alternative method: directly observe these strategies' historical return curves and see whether they frequently rise and fall together during the same periods. If multiple strategies' return curves move in near-lockstep (whether performing well or poorly together), that alone is intuitive evidence of high correlation — you don't need to understand the underlying technical details to make this judgment.

While this method isn't as precise as individually verifying technical dependencies, as a simplified judgment method an ordinary user can actually carry out themselves, it's plenty practical — if the return curves clearly move out of sync, the underlying correlation is likely genuinely lower; if they move in near-lockstep, even without knowing the exact reason, you should treat these strategies as a highly concentrated combination.

03 · How does it affect me?

Does the correlation risk discussed in this article relate to the strategy capacity decay mentioned in an earlier article?

There's some relationship, but they're different risk mechanisms. Strategy capacity decay addresses a single strategy's return declining as capital scale increases; strategy correlation risk addresses whether multiple strategies fail simultaneously under certain conditions because they share underlying dependencies. But the two can genuinely amplify each other — if the multiple strategies you're using are highly correlated and also share similar capacity constraints (all relying on the same limited arbitrage space within a market segment, say), when more and more capital floods into that market segment, the several "seemingly diversified" strategies you hold could simultaneously face capacity decay pressure, making the return decline more severe than a single strategy's capacity decay alone would be.

This is exactly why, when evaluating a DeFAI product portfolio, it's worth considering both risks together — not just asking whether these strategies' underlying dependencies are correlated, but also asking whether these strategies share the same capacity-limited market segment. Layering both questions together gives you a more complete grasp of your actual overall risk profile.

04 · What should I do?

If my current capital scale is still small, do I not need to worry about this correlation risk at all, since the impact is limited anyway?

A small capital scale does mean a smaller absolute loss amount from any single event, but the core issue with correlation risk isn't how large the loss amount is — it's how large the gap is between the risk level you think you're carrying and the risk level you're actually carrying. Even with a small committed amount, if you mistakenly believe you've achieved diversification and end up carrying a larger proportion of your capital in the same risk than you realize, that gap in awareness itself is worth correcting early, because this habit will grow along with your capital scale.

The more practical suggestion: treat checking strategy correlation as a habit to build starting from small amounts of capital, not something to start caring about only once your committed amount grows larger. Building the right diversification-assessment habit early lets you directly apply an already-verified judgment framework once your position size expands in the future, rather than scrambling to do this work only after your capital scale — and the risk exposure that comes with it — has already grown.

But if you're already comfortable with these single-layer evaluation methods and use multiple DeFAI strategies simultaneously to diversify risk, this article addresses the next layer: strategy correlation risk — whether what you think is diversification might actually just be the same risk repackaged multiple times.

First, Ask Yourself: What Happens to Your Strategies If a Specific Piece of Infrastructure Fails

This series has repeatedly emphasized verifying the trust level of various pieces of infrastructure — a cross-chain bridge's verification mechanism, an oracle's data source reliability. What this article asks you to do is extend that verification to a multi-strategy scenario: if you're running three strategies simultaneously and two of them depend on the same cross-chain bridge, once that bridge has a problem, you're actually carrying a concentration risk of two-thirds of your position being simultaneously affected — not the independent, mutually unaffected diversification you originally thought you had.

Market Conditions Themselves Are Another Easily Overlooked Shared Dependency

Beyond obvious technical infrastructure, a more hidden form of correlation comes from the strategies' profit logic itself. Using multiple strategies itself increases management complexity — you need to separately track each strategy's performance and its own technical details. This increased complexity can actually leave you with less capacity to do the work of cross-strategy dependency comparison, easily letting you settle into the surface-level comfort of "I'm using many different strategies, so I must be diversified" without ever actually verifying that assumption. The more strategies you have, the more consciously you need to spend time on this kind of cross-comparison, rather than letting the sheer number itself become a reason to relax your guard.

How to Judge Whether Your Combination Is Genuinely Diversified

The practical check is: list each strategy's key dependencies (data source, cross-chain bridge, chain, market condition required for profit) one by one and build a side-by-side comparison table. If most fields point to the same answer, your "diversified" allocation is fundamentally the same risk repeatedly deposited; only if each strategy is clearly different across most key dependencies is it genuinely, meaningfully diversified.

What This Means for Your Money

Next time you review your DeFAI capital allocation, don't just look at the surface number of how many different strategies you're using — spend time doing a side-by-side comparison to confirm whether these strategies are genuinely heterogeneous in their key dependencies. If you find they're actually highly correlated, rather than maintaining the illusion of diversification, it's more honest to measure your total position size against the risk of a single strategy — that's what actually lets your position planning reflect the risk you're really carrying.
