What is strategy correlation risk, and how does it differ from the common understanding of "diversified investing"?

In traditional investment theory, diversification reduces risk only if the assets or strategies being spread across each other are sufficiently uncorrelated — when one loses money, another shouldn't lose money for the same reason at the same time. In the DeFAI industry, a user might use multiple agents or strategies simultaneously, which on the surface looks like different strategies, different protocols, matching the intuition of diversification. But unpacking each strategy's underlying dependencies, you might find they actually share the same data source (all relying on the same price oracle, say), the same cross-chain bridge, or fundamentally are all betting on the same market condition (all needing a low-volatility environment to profit steadily, say).

This means "having many strategies" and "genuinely diversifying risk" are two different things — you might be running five strategies simultaneously, but if all five fundamentally depend on the same fragile link, once that link fails, all five could be affected simultaneously. The concentration risk you're actually carrying is far higher than the surface-level impression of "I'm using five different strategies" implies.

Why is strategy correlation risk especially easy to overlook in the DeFAI industry, and how does it differ from correlation risk in traditional finance?

In traditional finance, relatively mature quantitative tools and historical data exist for assessing correlation between assets or strategies (a correlation matrix between stocks is a standard analytical item for investment institutions), and this kind of analysis is relatively accessible to users or institutional investors. The DeFAI industry doesn't yet have such a mature, standardized analytical framework, and on top of that, most strategies' underlying technical details (which oracle they use, which bridge they depend on, which other protocols they interact with) often aren't fully disclosed — making it very hard for a user to piece together a complete picture of how correlated these strategies actually are underneath.

Another easily overlooked reason: many seemingly independent protocols in the DeFAI ecosystem actually share the same infrastructure — the same Layer 2 network, the same popular price oracle service, or even liquidity provided by the same batch of market makers. This kind of shared infrastructure is relatively rare in traditional finance, but very common in the still-early-stage DeFAI industry with limited infrastructure options — meaning the probability that strategies apparently spread across different protocols actually share the same underlying infrastructure could be far higher than a user's intuition suggests.

How is strategy correlation risk actually assessed, and can an ordinary user judge this themselves?

A complete quantitative correlation analysis (calculating the correlation coefficient between different strategies' historical returns, for example) requires relatively complete historical data and statistical ability that an ordinary user typically can't produce on their own, but a few indirect clues can help judge potential correlation: check what key infrastructure each strategy actually depends on — whether their price data sources are the same oracle service, whether cross-chain operations all go through the same bridge, whether execution environments are all deployed on the same chain; check whether these strategies' profit logic fundamentally depends on the same type of market condition (all needing a low-volatility environment, or all relying on a stable spread between specific assets, say); and look back at historical data to observe whether these strategies have previously shown abnormal performance simultaneously during the same period (whether both spiking or both crashing together, either is a sign of high correlation).

A more practical judgment method is directly asking yourself a concrete question: "If event X happens (a popular oracle service has a data anomaly, or a commonly used bridge gets attacked), would the strategies I currently have deployed all be affected simultaneously?" If the answer is yes, these strategies' correlation is far higher than it appears on the surface, and what you're actually carrying is concentration risk, not diversified risk.

What's the practical impact of strategy correlation risk for everyday users, and how should it apply to actual capital allocation decisions?

If you're using multiple DeFAI strategies at once with the goal of diversifying risk, it's worth spending time confirming whether these strategies genuinely diversify at the underlying correlation level, rather than just diversifying on the surface (different names, different interfaces). If unpacking them reveals multiple strategies actually share the same key link (the same oracle, the same bridge, the same chain), you should mentally categorize these strategies as one single risk unit, rather than treating them as separate, independent risk sources when planning your position.

In practice, prioritize a combination of strategies with clearly different underlying dependencies — pairing a strategy dependent on chain A's ecosystem with one dependent on chain B's, or a strategy that needs low volatility with one that actually benefits from high volatility. This kind of genuinely heterogeneous combination is what actually delivers the risk reduction traditional diversification theory promises. If you find the multiple strategies you're holding are highly correlated underneath, rather than maintaining the illusion of "looks diversified," it's more honest to measure your total position size against the risk of a single strategy — that kind of position planning is much closer to the real risk you're actually carrying.

The Missing Link +

Understanding strategy correlation risk helps users avoid the trap of "looks diversified, actually concentrated," enabling position planning that more closely matches genuine risk exposure; but a full quantitative correlation analysis requires relatively deep technical verification and historical data, and an ordinary user usually can only make a rough judgment through indirect clues and hypothetical scenario reasoning, unable to precisely quantify the actual degree of correlation between multiple strategies — which is exactly why, more than a precise number, developing the habit of proactively asking about underlying dependencies is more practical for an ordinary user.
